What’s one step you can take to protect pollinators? Consider planting a pollinator garden at home or in your community! This informational tour and talk, held at a certified pollinator habitat, offers tangible steps for creating a beautiful garden of any size, including how to seek certification as a Pollinator Habitat from Asheville GreenWork’s Bee City USA Chapter. The location for the workshop is the first pollinator habitat to be created along the Wilma Dykeman Greenway in Asheville’s River Arts District. The idea for this habitat grew from two projects undertaken for the Blue Ridge Naturalist Certificate of Merit program offered through The North Carolina Arboretum and blossomed into a dynamic community-based project. Participants in this small-group workshop will take home a native plant or packet of seeds.
Betsy Savely taught elementary school in a rural NC county for almost 30 years, sharing her passion for the environment and instilling in her students a respect for the earth and its creatures. She and her husband raised their children on a 130-acre farm, where they gardened organically, planted a small apple orchard and blueberries, and raised bees. An avid landscaper and gardener for over 30 years, Betsy has created pollinator habitats at eight different locations, including the location featured for this class. Betsy joined Asheville GreenWorks’ Bee City Leadership Committee in November 2019 and now serves as co-chair. She is a 2020 graduate of the Arboretum’s Blue Ridge Naturalist Certificate of Merit program.
