On a single mountainside in the Southern Appalachians, a careful observer might identify more than 1,200 species of moths during the course of a year. This class looks at the seemingly limitless diversity of insects and the important roles they play from pollinator to pathogen in the ecosystems of the Blue Ridge. We will explore the life cycles of the more common local insects, and discuss threats to these important elements of biodiversity.
Registration is open until the start of the second session. Anyone registering after the first class can catch up through viewing the recording.
A field experience has been designed for this class (register separately) to see the Blue Ghost Fireflies.
Dan Lazar served for many years as the director of education at the Western North Carolina Nature Center, followed by several years as executive director of the Colburn Earth Science Museum. Dan has a degree in forest biology from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry and has been an instructor in the Blue Ridge Naturalist program since 2005.
