Find your way in clay in this welcoming workshop with Potter David Voorhees, whose work is currently on exhibit in the Baker Visitor Center as part of Nature & Nurture: The Voorhees Family Artistic Legacy. David teaches participants of all levels to create a series of small bowls or drinking vessels suitable for tea, juice or wine. The morning session focuses on three different aspects of clay forming and decoration. Students will make a simple pinch or coil bowl using stoneware clay. A second bowl, pre-prepared by David and dried to a stiff leather-hard state, will be ready for carving using a variety of hand tools. A third pre-prepared bowl, will be coated with a black slip in readiness for sgrafitto decoration, a technique of scratching through the dark layer to reveal the white clay beneath. All the tools and equipment necessary for the class will be provided. A $35 cost for materials and mailing is included in the registration fee. Your three tea bowls will be glazed and fired by David in his studio and mailed to you within one month.
David Voorhees has been making pottery for almost 50 years here in western NC. Hailing from a family of artists, he chose clay for his medium as soon as he tried it. He has produced and sold his pottery nationally through craft shows, shops, galleries and online. He has taught pottery for decades at schools, camps and art centers in several countries. David and his wife, jeweler Molly Sharp Voorhees, maintain studios at their home in Zirconia, NC.
