“Knowing that you love the earth changes you, activates you to defend and protect and celebrate. But when you feel that the earth loves you in return, that feeling transforms the relationship from a one-way street into a sacred bond.” ― Robin Wall Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants
Learn and grow in place – loving where you live.
This new series continues through each coming season, with expertly-guided small-group walks that allow for mindful connection in the more than human world. With the help of the Arboretum's Blue Ridge Naturalist instructors, you’ll see with an eye to wonder and learn ways to actively preserve and protect our place in nature.
A mountain stream beside a wooded path often leads to contemplation. On this walk along Bent Creek, we reflect on the landscape of the valley we are in, molded over time by running water, earth materials, climate, topography, and the power of geological forces. Geologist Steve Yurkovich guides us in an understanding of the forces that shape where we live.
Steve Yurkovich is a retired professor of geology and currently a lecturer at the North Carolina Arboretum. He loves nature walks, calls them mind-clearing experiences, especially in the beauty and quiet of our national forests and parks.
Participants are eligible for Blue Ridge Naturalist Certificate of Merit Credits, Criteria II credits of NC OEE Environmental Education Certification, and school teachers can apply to receive CEU credit.
