The Southern Appalachians offer an exceptional diversity of fascinating and ecologically-important mushrooms. Students will learn the skills to safely identify local species of mushrooms, the 12 most common fungal "families" and their preferred habitats and ecological connections. Two full-day sessions onsite in the Arboretum forest allow for practical experience examining and identifying specimens in place. Come prepared to learn, hike (a little) and have fun! Students should dress appropriately for the weather and walking. Be sure to bring a loupe or hand lens and a field journal. Bring a bag lunch or order ahead for pick up at the Bistro.

Luke Cannon is an avid naturalist and ethnobotanist, whose enthusiasm and extensive knowledge of the region’s plants, birds, insects, lichens, fungi and more make him a popular teacher for students of all ages. He offers regular classes and walks in Western North Carolina with a mission to cultivate eco-literacy and reconnect people with the natural world.

**Upon registration, participants will be asked to identify if they are seeking certificate credit through Arboretum certificate of merit programs or NC Environmental Education. Responses will prompt further communication regarding requirements and reporting for credit.
