Landscape architecture has played -- and continues to play -- a central role in the development of The North Carolina Arboretum. More broadly, the profession has been an important contributor to many of the most important spaces and issues in our nation and throughout the world. With this talk by the Arboretum's executive director, we recognize World Landscape Architecture month and  the responsible, creative and functional design and use of our outdoor spaces in keeping with the societal issues of the day.

George Briggs has served as the first executive director of The North Carolina Arboretum since 1987. He also chairs the board of directors of the Olmsted Landscape Institute, a 501(c)(3) corporation leading a national initiative dedicated to preserving and promoting the landscape architectural process of Frederick Law Olmsted and to innovating measurement tools for evaluating the performance of managed landscapes. Mr. Briggs is a fellow in the American Society of Landscape Architects and holds degrees from Vanderbilt University, Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia in business administration, horticulture and landscape architecture, respectively. His professional recognitions include the Turner Award for Excellence in the Built Environment awarded by the North Carolina Office of State Construction, the Professional Award of the American Horticultural Society, Environmental Hero Award by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Honorary Member by the Garden Club of America, Service Award by the American Public Gardens Association, and Certificate of Appreciation from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
