This two-day course will focus on the influence of the Western North Carolina mountains on the region's writers, activists, and artists. The first day will consist of an overview of various western North Carolina writers and their portrayals of the landscape, with an emphasis on Kephart. The second day will be spent in Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Bryson City, visiting a few of Kephart's most treasured places, and discussing their role in his life and endeavors.

Required text: Back of Beyond: A Horace Kephart Biography by George Ellison and Janet McCue. Purchase of this book is available through Adult Education Programs. Brent Martin is the owner of Alarka Institute in the Cowee community of western North Carolina.  Alarka Institute offers literary, art, and nature based workshops along with custom designed private individual and group outdoor experiences.  He is the author of several poetry and non-fiction chapbooks, and a forthcoming collection of natural history essays to be published by History Press.  He has an M.A and ABD in History from Georgia State University, and has worked in environmental conservation for almost three decades.
