$88 Member | $108 Non-member

Limit: 12 students

This two-day workshop will introduce students to several of our Western North Carolina poets, with an emphasis on the late Kathryn Stripling Byer. There will also be readings and discussion on the poets George Ellison, Catherine Carter, Rose McLarney, Thomas Rain Crowe, and others. There is a writing component as well, and students are encouraged to bring their own poems for discussion and feedback. The instructor will also lead place-based writing exercises on the Arboretum grounds.

Brent Martin is the owner of Alarka Institute in the Cowee community of western North Carolina.  Alarka Institute offers literary, art, and nature based workshops along with custom designed private individual and group outdoor experiences.  Martin is the author of several poetry and non-fiction chapbooks, and a forthcoming collection of natural history essays to be published by History Press.  He has an M.A and ABD in History from Georgia State University, and has worked in environmental conservation for almost three decades.
