Discover the beauty of collecting and writing stories and oral histories through open-ended interviewing and analysis of photos, letters, and other documents. Whether you want to write an article, a family memoir, or a report on your work as a naturalist, learning how to interview and analyze documents effectively is a useful addition to your toolbox of skills.  Bring your preferred writing tools – pen, pencil or computer – and your ideas about whom you’d like to interview and learn how to dig deeply into the fertile ground of your interview.  If you have documents you’d like to analyze, bring them along.

Mary Jean Ronan Herzog is Professor Emeritus in the School of Teaching and Learning at Western Carolina University.  She has written several articles on the subject of interviewing and analyzing qualitative forms of data.
