BRN Elective - 2 Hours

Join us for an exploration of the treasures of the night sky as we discover the constellations, bright stars, planets, and deep sky objects that fill the winter evening skies.  In this introductory class we’ll review the basic use of planispheres and star charts to find our way around the night sky and learn about some of the rich collection of objects that are visible in binoculars and small telescopes. Weather permitting, we'll also do some stargazing from the Arboretum grounds. Adults of all ages and backgrounds are welcome and no previous astronomy or observing experience is required.

Stephan Martin is an astronomer and educator who has taught astronomy at colleges and universities across the U.S. for more than 25 years. He has lectured on light pollution and its effects on the environment and has offered stargazing and introductory astronomy workshops domestically and internationally. He was formerly the supervisor of the Williams College observatory, where he participated in research expeditions around the world to study and observe solar eclipses.
