Many trees in the Appalachian Mountains of Western North Carolina combine to create a spectacular foliage color show during the autumn months. This class covers the biology of what causes seasonal color change and teaches participants how to identify trees in autumn by their colored leaves, fruit and other botanical characteristics. This class fulfills a core requirement for the Blue Ridge Naturalist Certificate.

A naturalist and educator who lives in Mills River, N.C., Carlton Burke operates Carolina Mountain Naturalists, which specializes in presenting live animal and nature programs for area schools, summer camps and many other organizations including the Arboretum where he has been a popular instructor for many years. He was the curator of exhibits at the Western North Carolina Nature Center for over 25 years and is a state and federally licensed wildlife rehabilitator.
