Learn about the incredible diversity of trees found in Western North Carolina as we begin in the classroom to learn about basic tree identification skills and their natural history. We will then move outdoors to roam across the wooded trails of the Arboretum to identify as many native and naturalized tree species as possible and to participate in activities designed to gain an appreciation for trees and the surrounding forest. Pack a bag lunch and come prepared to spend several hours outdoors on the Arboretum grounds.

Carlton Burke is a naturalist and educator who operates Carolina Mountain Naturalists, specializing in presenting live animal and nature programs for area schools, summer camps and many other organizations including the Arboretum, where he has been a popular instructor for many years. He was the curator of exhibits at the Western North Carolina Nature Center for over 25 years and is a state and federally licensed wildlife rehabilitator.
